Gatwick Airport railway station redevelopment

£53 million being spent on station improvements.

As part of a long term improvement strategy from Network Rail, £53m is being spent on improvements and redevelopment at Gatwick Airport railway station. A new platform is being developed, Gatwick Express will have dedicated platforms at the airport and the station will be smarter and less congested.

The new platform being built will improve train performance in the Gatwick area for all services on the Brighton mainline. An upgrade of the signaling equipment will also take place.

There will be improved passenger circulation on platforms 5 and 6 (dedicated to Gatwick Express) through the replacement of an existing stairway with an escalator and the installation of a new lift.

The refurbishment of the concourse area that will begin from the start of 2012 will provide better facilities for passengers and improved circulation.

The major construction work is not scheduled to start until autumn 2012 after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games have finished. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
