Up-to-the-minute information about current engineering works and any other service disruptions on Gatwick Express

  • Storm Brian to affect Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services until Monday 23 October
    Show details
    Hide details

Strong winds with gusts of between 40-50 mph have been forecast until Monday 23 October across the Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink networks.

A 50 mph speed restriction will be imposed between 10:00 and 22:00 today on the following routes:

    • Oxted - East Grinstead / Uckfield
    • Redhill - Tonbridge
    • Three Bridges - Brighton
    • Three Bridges - Barnham
    • Brighton - Portsmouth Harbour / Southampton Central
    • Brighton - Ashford International via Eastbourne

A reduced service will run between London and Brighton while the speed limit is in place to help ease congestion. There is mutual ticket acceptance in place between Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink to help you complete your journey.

Network Rail, who own and maintain the railway, have specialist teams in place who work proactively to identify potential problems before they arise. They apply an adhesive to the tracks where leaf fall is heavy, run leaf busting treatment trains; they also have chainsaw trained teams to remove fallen trees and branches.

Seasonal leaf fall can cause adhesion problems for trains when they become impacted on the track and turn into a Teflon like layer on the rails. This results in drivers having to brake earlier than normal as well as giving traction problems when leaving stations.

Please be aware that platforms can become slippery due to wet weather and leaf fall. Care should be taken when travelling on platforms and stations. You are advised to stand behind yellow lines for your safety.

The following routes are affected as a result of Storm Brian:

    Fareham and Southampton Central:

The 16:02 London Victoria to Southampton Central service struck a tree on the line near Swanwick. The tree has been removed and the train has been inspected, allowing lines to reopen. Trains between Fareham and Southampton Central may still be delayed or cancelled whilst services return to normal. Ticket acceptance is in place with South Westen Railway and you are able to travel via Clapham Junction.

  • Storm Brian to affect southern England and Wales on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October
    Show details
    Hide details

Storm Brian is expected to bring strong winds to southern parts of England and across Wales this weekend. Gusts exceeding 50 mph are expected widely, increasing to 70 mph along exposed coastal areas.

As a result, fallen trees and other debris may temporarily block railway lines and damage overhead wires. Speed restrictions may be imposed in the worst affected areas for safety reasons, which may delay your journey. Also seasonal leaf fall may be accelerated by the strong winds, leading to adhesion problems for trains.

Temporary speed restrictions are planned to be in place this weekend on several routes. You can find more information on how services are affected using the links below:
